Mimi Anderson is many things. She’s a wife, mother and grandmother. She’s an accomplished ultra-runner, and the holder of multiple Guinness World Records. Mimi is also a Free to Run Ambassador, coach and treasured friend. She has been part of the Free to Run team from the start, and we feel incredibly lucky to have her support.
This September Mimi will attempt to break another world record for a female runner. This time she’s running across the United States; an astonishing 2,850-mile journey from the steps of City Hall in Los Angeles to the steps of City Hall in New York City. To break the record, she needs to finish the course in less than 69 days 2 hours and 40 minutes.
When we first heard the news we were amazed of course, but not entirely surprised. Mimi has raced across deserts in the Sahara, Libya, Chile, Kalahari and Namibia. She has raced over mountains in Colorado, the Alps and the Himalayas. She has braved the Jungles of Peru, and set a new female record in one of the hottest places on earth. At the other end of extremes, Mimi has raced and won a 352-mile self-sufficiency race in the Arctic, setting a course record that has yet to be broken.
In 2008 Mimi completed a run from John O’Groats to Land’s End in the UK, a distance of 840 miles. Along the way, she set a new Female World Record. In 2012, she set another Female World Record for running the length of Ireland, 345 miles. Mimi was the first person to hold both World Records simultaneously. In September 2014, she ran an average of 61km for 32 consecutive days across South Africa’s Freedom Trail (2,000km). In doing so, she raised over £26,000 on behalf of Save the Children.
Mimi has used her record-breaking races as a platform to raise awareness about the issues that are most important to her. We’re therefore incredibly proud to announce that she has chosen Free to Run as one of her designated charities for this epic race. Mimi’s race will start on September 7th and if you follow us online, you’ll have all of the news and updates throughout the race. This is not, however, the only way you can participate.
If you would like to run and fundraise for Free to Run, we’re inviting people to run with Mimi as she crosses the country. She is very excited about sharing her journey with the Free to Run community. Each day will bring a new challenge and although Mimi may be struggling at times she very much wants people to know that they can join her, with a few rules and considerations. If you’re interested, please send an email to both firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com. You can see the full course here, and it will be fairly easy to meet up with Mimi and her team. You can check the live GPS tracker the day before you plan to come out for real time information. You can determine roughly where Mimi will be by calculating a pace of around 5mph.
Mimi was a coach for our Ambassadors Nelofar and Zainab as they prepared to race across the Gobi Desert in the spring of 2015. Before their race, she had some wonderful words of encouragement for these two young runners. Mimi said, “There will be moments when you feel you can’t go on. Take five minutes, sort yourself out, and remember that your body is capable of doing a lot more than you think it can. Remember the reason you're running this race, focus on finishing one day at a time. If that’s too much, go from checkpoint to checkpoint, but keep moving forward.”
Wise words from a very inspiring lady. Stay tuned, this is just the beginning of an incredible event in sports. For more information, please visit: http://www.mimirunsusa.com/
